Regenerative Medicine for Heart Failure

Heart failure is a disease of the heart muscle. The weakened heart–damaged by heart attack, chronic hypertension, heart disease, cardiomyopathy, infection, or toxins–is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body’s requirements.

In its early stages, heart failure may go unnoticed, as the heart muscle compensates by enlarging and thickening so it can beat faster and more strongly. But like any overworked muscle, it can’t keep up indefinitely, and fatigue, shortness of breath, edema (fluid retention), and other symptoms of heart failure become evident. Physicians usually prescribe drugs to reduce the heart’s workload, but what patients really need is regenerative medicine that energizes and restores the failing heart muscle.

Stem Cell Research and Heart Failure

The Newport Beach Stem Cell Treatment Center’s protocol for heart failure involves the potential benefits of adult stem cells. In an outpatient procedure performed by our board-certified surgeon, a small amount of fat is removed during a liposuction procedure. The patient’s fat–the richest source of stem cells–is processed and the stem cells are separated out. These cells are then redeployed via an intravenous injection back into the patient. The entire regenerative medicine procedure takes approximately three hours from start to finish.

At the Newport Beach Stem Cell Treatment Center, we are committed not only to quality care for our patients with heart failure but also to stem cell research and the advancement of regenerative medicine. We are proud to be part of the only Investigational Review Board (IRB)-based stem cell treatment network in the United States that utilizes fat-transfer surgical technology. We have an array of ongoing IRB-approved protocols, and we provide care for patients with a wide variety of disorders that may be treated with adult stem cell-based regenerative therapy. Not all cases of heart failure respond to stem cell therapy, and each patient must be assessed individually to determine the potential for optimal results from this regenerative medicine process.
